Inspiration
Nomad stemmed from the universal travelling frustration of struggling to find authentic places where the food is amazing, or the atmosphere is perfect. Many legacy review sites, like Yelp or TripAdvisor, are cluttered with outdated information, spam reviews, and recommendations that don't reflect current trends and our personal tastes. A newer app, Beli, introduced users to share eatery rankings with their contacts. We used these apps as an inspiration and took them several steps forward to create our social media platform to offer real-time analytics, tailored recommendations, and expand upon sharing your experiences with friends and family across entertainment venues, cultural sites, outdoor experiences, private events, and hidden local gems.
What it does
Nomad functions as a comprehensive social media travel intelligence platform that merges community-driven discovery with advanced personalization technology Nomad employs machine learning algorithms (powered by Woodwide AI), to analyze your travel history; spot categories, price sensitivity, ambiance preferences, crowd tolerance, and generate predictive compatibility scores (0-100%) for new venues before you visit to have the best adventures.
Our key features include:
🎯Smart Spot Logging: Users write reviews and post photos about places; AI automatically extracts sentiment and generates scores based on a user's previous experiences.
🔮Vibe Forecast: Real-time predictions showing which nearby spots will match your mood right now.
💯Compatibility Scoring: See why you'll love a place with reasoning (ex, "We logged your reviews of peaceful temples as 8.7/10 on average—based on others' reviews, this spot matches 91% of your preferences!").
👥Social Discovery: Follow friends, see their top spots, and get recommendations based on travelers with similar tastes.
How we built it
- ReactNative for the frontend and Node.js for the backend.
- For our prediction models, we used Wood Wide AI and The Token Company to streamline token usage.
- Supabase for database and authentication functionalities.
- Prototyped our app with Expo Go.
What we learned
Creating an IOS app for the first time proved to be difficult; we had to constantly test and debug our code over and over again. Integrating other platforms for our app was another struggle. Getting our UI/UX to look and feel how we wanted it to also ended up being a good challenge for us to overcome. Documentation is 🔑!!
What's next for Nomad
Optimizations, getting beta testers, and more community features for users to interact with each other.
