Inspiration
Have you ever tried to make friends, only to feel awkward or out of place? Well, we know making friends in Vancouver can be hard so we try to address this problem. That's why we created Next Tea Me - to make it easier for everyone--students, professionals, and even seniors, to find a new friend nearby. We aim to foster genuine friendships by bringing them together in real life, breaking the barriers of online-only interactions.
What it does
A user who is in close proximity to another user will click the Brew button which will wait for another user in case proximity to click it as well. When both are connected, they will be able to tell each other their exact position which will usually be at a cafe.
How we built it
We used Django for the backend. GPS to find user location. Sockets for connecting users to each other. Firebase for the database.
Challenges we ran into
We decided to challenge ourselves by learning the framework Django while making this application. We struggled with learning how it worked, and the directory.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to save a lot of api calls by instead using sockets and caching.
What we learned
We learned how to use Django.
What's next for Next Tea Me
We want to implement a heat map that tells other users where people are concentrated at.
