Navikam - GPS Tracking System

Inspiration

Living in regions where wildlife conservation and asset tracking are critical, we realized the need for a low-cost, long-range tracking system that doesn’t rely on cellular networks. Traditional GPS tracking solutions are expensive, require constant connectivity, and suffer from battery limitations.

Inspired by the limitations of satellite and cellular tracking, we built Navikam, an IoT-based GPS tracking system using LoRa technology. Our goal is to create a scalable, energy-efficient, and cost-effective tracking solution for various applications such as wildlife monitoring, disaster response, security, and transport logistics.


What It Does

Navikam is a GPS tracking system leveraging LoRa technology for long-range, low-power data transmission. Key features include:

  • Long-Range Tracking – Provides GPS location updates over distances up to 50 km in open environments.
  • Low Power Consumption – Optimized for long-term deployment with extended battery life.
  • No Cellular Dependency – Uses LoRa 433MHz ISM band instead of cellular or satellite networks, reducing costs.
  • Real-time Data Transmission – Sends GPS coordinates and status updates to a central monitoring system.
  • Cloud & Web Integration – Displays live tracking data on a web-based interface for easy monitoring.
  • Multiple Use Cases – Suitable for wildlife tracking, disaster rescue, security, asset monitoring, and logistics management.

How We Built It

  1. Hardware Development:

    • Used LoRa modules for long-range communication.
    • Integrated GPS sensors for accurate positioning.
    • Designed low-power electronics to ensure long battery life.
  2. Software Implementation:

    • Developed LoRaWAN-based protocols for efficient data transmission.
    • Built a cloud-based dashboard for real-time tracking and visualization.
    • Created a mobile-friendly web interface for easy monitoring.
  3. Testing & Optimization:

    • Conducted field tests to analyze signal strength and GPS accuracy.
    • Optimized data packet size to reduce latency and power consumption.
    • Ensured reliable long-range communication in rural and remote areas.
