Inspiration The inspiration for NavigateHer came from a desire to help women and improve their sense of safety while traveling. With rising concerns about personal safety and the limitations of current navigation tools, we envisioned an app that combines technology and real-time data to make safer routing decisions. This project was driven by a mission to create a tool that fosters independence and confidence for women in their daily lives.

What it does NavigateHer is a mobile application that extends Google Maps functionality by integrating real-time crime reports to adjust walking or driving routes. The app provides users with safer alternatives based on recent incidents in their area, ensuring peace of mind while navigating. Its user-friendly interface makes safety insights accessible without overwhelming the user, creating a seamless and effective experience.

How it's built We built NavigateHer using a full-stack approach:

  • Frontend: Developed with Swift and SwiftUI for iOS to ensure a responsive and intuitive user experience.
  • Backend: Implemented using Node.js and Firebase to manage real-time crime data and user preferences.
  • Integration: Leveraged the Google Maps API to offer routing functionality and overlay crime data.
  • Data Sources: Incorporated publicly available crime data from law enforcement and community reports for accuracy and reliability. Challenges
  • Data Integration: Mapping crime data to specific geographic coordinates while ensuring accuracy and timeliness was a significant challenge.
  • Algorithm Development: Designing an efficient route adjustment algorithm that balances safety with convenience required extensive testing.
  • Time Constraints: Completing a full-stack project within the limited timeframe of the hackathon made it difficult to finish all the functions Accomplishments Successfully integrated real-time crime data with Google Maps to adjust routes dynamically. Created an algorithm that prioritizes safety without compromising usability.

What's next for NavigateHer

  • Enhanced Data Sources: Partnering with local governments and community groups to access more detailed and up-to-date crime reports.
  • Expanded Features: Adding options like SOS alerts, community reporting tools, and a history of safe zones.
  • Cross-Platform Development: Expanding to Android to reach a broader audience.
  • AI Integration: Incorporating AI to predict safety trends and offer proactive recommendations.
  • Community Engagement: Building partnerships with advocacy groups to promote safety and awareness for all users.
