Inspiration
We initially wanted to create a game (as most people do for a VR-related project). Then we saw the idea of a natural disaster simulator on a devpost published by one of the HackReality Organizers. We were sold. Ideas kept flowing out left and right, create a simulation of a devastating hurricane. Then, create an experience where the user gets to play as a rescuer after the disaster passes. Our ideas did surpassed our ability however since this was our first take of using unity
What it does
Currently, our project just simulates a very heavy thunderous rainstorm at a beach with some city buildings and an ocean.
How we built it
Our project was built using one of the latest versions of Unity, version 2020.3.0f1.
Challenges we ran into
Most of our challenges were due to our lack of experience in the Unity software. How to import sound into the simulator, creating realistic clouds (not included in the game), even finding and importing assets was a challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of what we created using over very limited knowledge about unity. We really like how our beach looks and feels in VR and the sounds of the rain and thunder.
What we learned
We learned pretty much the very basics of Unity and how to create a simple VR application. Also, we learned how to use textures and turn them into materials.
What's next for Natural Disaster Simulator
Our next plan would be to add realistic clouds to the game. Then to create destructible terrain like roofs blowing off houses, lamposts, etc... Possibly add a boardwalk to the beach and some interactable objects like umbrellas, beachballs, etc..

Our original repository, HackReality-2021-NaturalDisasters, was not correctly merging with our branch even though the master branch was empty. We created a new repo, Natural_Disaster_Simulator, to store our code. All of our commits can be seen in our original repo.
