Inspiration

Each of our teammates, as well as the majority of students, knows the struggle of managing personal finances. We hope by creating this project, we can alleviate stress and teach students to better handle their finances.

What it does

Our product, MONERI, is a fintech web app. Its purpose is to serve a "one-stop-shop of all things student finance.” Our goal was to put as many resources as possible in one location—to help students manage their finances in one accessible web app—being a hassle, confusion, and stress-free.

On our web app, a student can find personalized financial tips, job listings near them, track their expenses and savings, and earn points for saving money that can be redeemed for gift card giveaways.

How we built it

We built MONERI using HTML/CSS/JS and the Chart.js API. We used Chart.js to make the graph on the “My Money” tab so the user can input how much they spend and save each week.

Challenges we ran into

We originally wanted to make a calendar where the user could input deadlines for the fees they needed to pay for school so we tried to use Django for the backend of the web app but weren’t able to keep it running on repl.it. We had to move the project over into Glitch and remove all of the backends and use Chart.js instead to track expenses and savings.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are most proud of using the Chart.js API because none of us were very experienced with JS before the hackathon. We were also very proud to have successfully finished our project!

What we learned

We learned more about using JavaScript and different JS APIs for a web app, something we didn’t know much about before. We weren’t proficient in JS so we had to use many online learning resources for assistance.

What's next for MONERI

In the future, we’d like to find an API that allows the user to input a fee and a deadline onto a calendar instead of a chart tracking expenses and savings.
