Inspiration
Putting together recent social media phenomenon BeReal, along with our interest in music, we created MyTaste. We’ve always been interested in different ways we could use the Spotify API, and we decided that this project would be perfect with it. Spotify itself is not a very social application, as the furthest it goes is being able to see what your friends are listening to. However, we’ve seen some integration of music and social media -- such as people posting whatever song they’re currently listening to on their Instagram story, or a visualization of their most recently listened to songs (i.e Reciptify, Obscurify). Thus, we decided to create a social media application for music that is constantly updating with new songs.
What it does
At a randomized time of day, MyTaste will fire a notification prompting a user to post whatever song they’re currently listening to, or if they’re not listening to anything at the moment -- their most recently played song. Users are able to find and add friends on the app and see what they’re currently listening to as well, but only after they’ve posted a song themselves. Otherwise, their feed is hidden. When a user taps on a post, they’re able to open the song on their selected music platform (i.e. Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music, etc), as well as interact with the post through comments. Users also have the option to post late in case they miss the initial notification. All posts only last a day, but users are able to see an archive of their previous posts on their personal profile.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges we ran into was figuring out how to adapt the application to accommodate multiple different music streaming platforms. At the time of developing the idea, we were only familiar with the Spotify API. We later found that there were APIs for other streaming platforms (all except for YouTube Music). At implementation, this would likely be a large challenge for us to integrate into our project.
Accomplishments we’re proud of
We were proud of our initial prototyping of our application, as well as the video we created for our application. For our video, we drew inspiration from product releases and advertisements. We were able to use our Figma prototype to show the user flow within this video, which efficiently showed the functionality of our application.
What we learned
We learned about the different available APIs for music streaming platforms, as well as which frameworks would be best for developing a mobile application. We also learned more about the capabilities of Figma. Before, we only used it for laying our design, but this time we were able to add in user flow and animations for our prototype.
What’s next
For future progress on this application we hope to begin implementing the application with React Native, as it would be the easiest to adapt across multiple operating systems with minimum OS specific code. It would also be the most cost efficient if we were to deploy it for general use.
