Inspiration
Many of our peers deal with a lot of stress. We encounter many of our peers who have to difficult situations whether it be from numerous college applications, new social situations, large workloads, or tough family life. These events lead to a large mental strain on our friends and classmates.
What it does
MyEscape is an interactive speech processor that looks for keywords in the text chat to help determine a general, nonofficial diagnosis. The bot is able to connect the user to helpful hotlines as well as provide ideas for reaching out to friends in times of need. It lets you type how you feel and depending on what you put, it asks questions to give the most correct diagnosis it can.
How we built it
We used skills that we learned during the hackathon to build a system that detects keywords to determine its next set of response in the form of either another question or a non-offical diagnosis. Because our knowledge was still very limited we used many "if" statements.
Challenges we ran into
Our most difficult challenge was our loss of experience and knowledge in programming. We had huge plans for this project but had to simplify them not only due to the little time we had but also because we didn't have the know-how to do so.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
In general, We are really proud of finishing this project. If you are really specific you can get a pretty good diagnosis and after the diagnosis based on what you get, we added hotlines and ways to ask your friend for some mental help.
What we learned
During the hackathon, we learned the basics of programming using python, how to work with an intense time constraint, how to solve problems on our own, how to debug a program, and how to work with limited knowledge of python.
What's next for MyEscape
We are not even close to being done. There are still so many more possibilities. In the future, we would like there to be more long paragraph answers. In the future, we want to use AI to make it so that MyEscape Bot can properly talk to a person and we want to have a computer analyze text messages between friends and then incorporate that into making a person feel more comfortable and more willing to share than they would currently.
