My Theatre

Inspiration

A groupmate's Blu-ray and 4K movie collection and ideas for an innovative way to showcase a collection. We initially planned for it to look like an art gallery, but upon narrowing down to movies we figured a movie theatre was more fitting.

What it does

Intended to:

• Allow you to add movies that you own a copy of to the collection gallery
• View the movies as movie posters, with left and right arrow key scrolling
• See the details of your movie collection by clicking on a poster - when you got it, when you watched it, etc.

How we built it

• React for the front end, with React Router and React Bootstrap libraries
• Python for the backend
• Vite server to run it
• Lots of Googling to try new things

Challenges we ran into

• Struggles connecting the backend to the front end
• Scrolling to the side with animations - took a bit to figure out
• One groupmate worked from home, adding a communication hurdle to our work

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• This was the 1st hackathon for 2 of our groupmates!
• The scrolling and animation on the frontend gallery page looks very nice :)

What we learned

• Making a website like this in just 24 hours is hard but we can do it
• There are lots of ways to animate things in a browser - we didn't know CSS animations existed until we discovered them

What's next for My Theatre

• Who knows, maybe some of us will fork it and keep working...
