Inspiration

We took inspiration from useful browser extensions like Honey and Grammarly. We wanted to create an extension that would benefit society on a greater scale and decided to focus on the topic of climate change.

What it does

The browser extension provides users with an easy way to track the carbon footprint left by their online purchases and the ability to view similar products that are better for the environment.

How we built it

We created mockups of how the extension page might look on a product webpage and its chrome Web store page using Google images.

Challenges we ran into

We struggled to determine how the extension would be accessed by the user because appearing on the product page might be invasive and not being visible on pages at all may make users forget to use the extension. In the end, we decided to only have a score wheel displayed on product pages, with the alternative products list visible when the user clicks on the icon.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of how this extension can help people be more considerate of their purchases in relation to the environment. We also think that this will force companies to be environmentally progressive.

What we learned

We refined our communication and teamwork skills. As well, with this being the first hackathon of some of our group members, we gained valuable experience in brainstorming and visualizing innovative technology.

What's next for My FootPrint

We hope to create a functioning prototype for My Footprint to get a better grasp on how the extension should work and any areas that require improvement to enhance the user experience.
