Inspiration 🌱

We wanted to create something that incorporated music and design while being easy to play. We enjoy playing gardening games in Animal Crossing and Minecraft to relax after school, and wanted to recreate that feeling.

What it does 🌱

“Music Garden” is a gardening game that allows the user to plant seven flowers, which correspond to seven different notes. The flowers can create a simple melody when planted in a certain order. The game also allows the user to interact with different elements on screen. The flowers can be arranged in any pattern or shape, so each garden is unique.

How we built it 🌱

First, we planned out which flowers to use for the project. The first letter of each flower corresponds to a letter note on the C Major scale (i.e. Carnation → C). Then, we created the pixel art for everything in the game. After the game was completed, we learned HTML and CSS to create a website to embed the game into. To embed the scratch game, we used TurboWarp.

Challenges we ran into 🌱

None of us had very much skill in programming, so we had a sizable learning curve to overcome. Initially, we wanted to develop the game in JavaScript. This was difficult, since we would have to learn an entirely new programming language in 24 hours, and we didn’t know where to start. Instead, we switched tracks and created the game in Scratch, which is based on JavaScript.

Accomplishments that we're proud of 🌱

We’re proud of the art in the game, as creativity was a very large focus in the creation of our project. We are also proud of how the game turned out, especially having functional drag-and-drop tools. Most of all, we’re proud of completing the project, because we’ve never done a hackathon before.

What we learned 🌱

We learned how to use HTML and CSS to create a webpage to host our game, and how to make pixel art and animations for the design. Technical skills aside, we also learned to manage our time well within the 24 hours given, and how to work as a team effectively.

What's next for Music Garden 🌱

We want to spend more time learning JavaScript so that we can fully create the game in text-based code. We also want to add more flowers and music notes to the game. In the future, we would like to turn the game into a real app.
