Inspiration
We drew inspiration from our backgrounds in art, video games, and stories. Yuliya, the vector and video game art creator, was a huge inspiration for all of us as we dream of becoming full-time video game designers.
What it does
It's a game where a little mushroom completes a short story by traversing through a few islands, talking to other creatures and fulfilling a prophecy.
How we built it
We used Replit to host .html files, images, and .js files, allowing multiple people to program simultaneously. We used .html files to show the images of the different maps and characters, and the .js files mostly controlled changing areas and moving the character around.
Challenges we ran into
We originally used GitHub Desktop for file sharing, but Replit was more time-efficient as we could edit code without having to fetch, push, and pull changes between computers. We had troubles with changing maps via changing web pages, getting our character to move, debugging key presses, and overlaying other objects onto the main maps.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is our first time creating something like this, and we are very proud of how everything looks and comes together. There were a lot of moving parts, but we've made something with a story arc and various visual environments.
What we learned
We remembered how to interact with .html files and handle simultaneous key presses via JavaScript. We also learned how to make a game in HTML5.
What's next for Mushroom Madness
More islands/lore. Originally we wanted to have multiple themed islands and puzzles to solve on each one, but this was just not feasible in the time we had. In the future we would love to explore these possibilities and expansions.
(NOTE: All of the files are in GitHub. The .zip submission is limited to 35 MB, and our assets are greater, so not all files will be in the .zip submission itself. Please use the GitHub repository for our complete submission!)
