Inspiration
Moowi was born partly from my activities as a fruit importer; from my network of Mexican producers, it became apparent that cryptocurrency technology could improve the ecosystem of international payments. This is how I approached the CELO Blockchain at the start of 2021. Together with them, we refined the project to focus on remittances while making sure that the project was as easy to use as possible.
What it does
With Moowi, users can top up crypto wallets with cash at the supermarket, send remittances, buy NFTS, and make remote payments.
How we built it
By using a QR code that can be recharged at supermarkets with fiat cash, our users can on-board cUSD into their wallet and then use these funds to send, pay or save.
Challenges we ran into
Due to manpower challenges, my team and I work part-time on this project, so we have made little progress.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were selected as the Best Mission Aligned Project by the CELO blockchain accelerator in November 2021 for our aligned proposal to boost migrants' prosperity
What we learned
In most onboarding projects, the focus is on creating a bridge to banked people, and not many if any allow unbanked users to access cryptocurrencies.
What's next for Moowi
Our partnerships with other Celo ecosystem projects are allowing us to test the onboarding process for their wallets.
Also, we have begun discussions with Grupo Elektra in Mexico about becoming a cash-out point for our users. There are over 7000 Elektra stores in Mexico, the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, and El Salvador.
