Inspiration

Being high school students and getting ready to go to college, we want to limit the financial mistakes we make. With the help of easy to understand financial literacy and a physical spending rate monitor we are able to keep ourselves in check.

What it does

With credit cards growing in popularity, budgeting and saving is harder than ever. Money gets spent almost unnoticeably. Our website includes information about how our device works as well as a dictionary of important financial terms to aid students that are moving onto independent living. Our physical model with the arduino monitors our user's spending.

How we built it

Arduino + HTML+CSS

Challenges we ran into

We had to learn HTML and CSS. We had very limited knowledge of web dev prior to coming here. What's more we wanted to challenge ourselves after taking the learnathon workshop in Arduino so we learned how to use IR sensing and integrate it with an LCD display to provide an interactive experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are extremely proud of the physical and online platforms that we created. They look amazing and surpassed our expectations of ourselves. We are even happier that the two systems work cohesively with each other while complimenting one another.

What we learned

How to be abstract in C++ (we learned about void - so exciting!), how to build an HTML&CSS website, finding alternatives to using javascript since we were unfamiliar with the language, among many other beginner challenges.

What's next for MontE

In addition to improving our website with javascript and more content, we want to turn our Arduino system into a wearable application that can be a physically representation of how much we spend. Inspired by one of MIT Media Lab's ideas to create wearable tech in the form of skin safe tattoos, we want to make the meter monitor into a tattoo that could constantly remind its user of their spending as well as be interactive with the website or app.
