Inspiration

In today’s digital world, doomscrolling has become almost automatic. We noticed how easy it is to fall into endless scrolling loops that drain focus, motivation, and mental energy. We wanted to build something that doesn’t just block distractions—but actively reverses the dopamine cycle and helps users regain control of their attention.

What it does

Monk Mode is a dopamine-reversal app designed to break doomscrolling habits in real time.

When the app detects prolonged scrolling or distraction patterns, it interrupts the behavior by triggering a 2-back cognitive task, a scientifically backed working memory exercise.

How we built it

Frontend: Built an intuitive, minimal UI to avoid adding cognitive clutter Detection System: Tracks user interaction patterns (scrolling duration, frequency) to identify doomscrolling behavior Intervention Engine: Triggers the 2-back task at key moments of cognitive fatigue 2-Back Game Logic: Dynamically generates sequences and tracks accuracy/performance Feedback Loop: Adjusts difficulty and frequency based on user performance

Challenges we ran into

Detecting doomscrolling accurately without being intrusive or overly aggressive Balancing interruption vs. user experience, too frequent interruptions feel frustrating Designing the 2-back task to be engaging but not overwhelming Ensuring the app actually helps rather than becoming another distraction Validating that the intervention timing aligns with real cognitive fatigue

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Successfully integrated a science-backed cognitive intervention (2-back task) into a real-time app Built a system that doesn’t just block behavior—but replaces it with something beneficial Created a smooth, minimal UI that keeps users focused Developed an adaptive system that personalizes difficulty and intervention timing Turned a psychological concept (dopamine reversal) into a functional product

What's next for Monk Mode

Integrate machine learning to better detect personalized distraction patterns Expand beyond the 2-back task with a suite of cognitive reset exercises Add cross-platform tracking (mobile + desktop) Provide analytics on focus, habits, and cognitive improvement over time Introduce a “deep work mode” with longer, structured focus session Explore integrations with apps like social media platforms for deeper intervention
