Inspiration

We were inspired to create Miss Market to address the gender gap in financial literacy, particularly among middle and high school girls. We wanted to empower young women to take control of their financial futures and break down barriers in traditionally male-dominated fields like investing. We knew that if we showed investing and trading in an accessible friendly way, it would make these topics feel less daunting and make more women try out investing for themselves!

What it does

Miss Market is an app designed to educate middle and high school girls about stocks and investing through paper trading. Users can learn about the stock market through a guided simulation, practice trading with virtual money, and gain confidence in their financial decision-making skills in a safe and supportive environment.

How we built it

For prototyping, our UX design team built the user flow using Figma and they used Animaker for the interactive walkthrough for the app. For the development side, we used the Google Flutter UI Framework and Android Studios as the IDE for development. We also used We built Miss Market using a combination of user-centered design principles and educational content development. The app features interactive lessons, simulated trading simulations, and real-time market data integration to provide a comprehensive learning experience. We also collaborated with financial experts and educators to ensure the accuracy and relevance of the content.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges we faced was designing an engaging and intuitive user interface that would appeal to our target audience of middle and high school girls. We also encountered difficulties in balancing the complexity of financial concepts with the need for accessibility and simplicity in the app's design. On the development side, there were a lot of challenges with one of the main features: paper trading. We tried integrating Python into Flutter to be able to use the Yahoo Finance API to simulate trading. We did this in many different ways using different Flutter packages and APIs such as pythonFFI, yahoo_finance_stock_reader, and more. Unfortunately, we were not able to get it to work by the end of the time but we know what we need to do to integrate it in the future.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we were able to make our idea come to life in the prototype despite a lot of technical challenges. We are also proud that we learned so much in such a short amount of time. There were so many APIs, packages, and other technologies that we didn't know existed and it was cool to get a chance to explore. We are also proud that we have laid the groundwork to one day create a platform that empowers young women to develop essential financial literacy skills and gain confidence in their ability to navigate the stock market.

What we learned

Through the process of building Miss Market, we learned the importance of tailoring educational content to specific demographics and the value of incorporating interactive and hands-on learning experiences. We also gained insights into the unique challenges and opportunities in promoting financial literacy among young women.

What's next for Miss Market

In the future, we plan to expand Miss Market's features and content to cover a broader range of financial topics, including budgeting, saving, and long-term financial planning. We also aim further to enhance the app's user experience and accessibility to reach a wider audience of young women and continue making a positive impact on their financial futures.
