Inspiration

We’ve always been fascinated by the playful chaos of VR—crazy gadgets, unexpected surprises, and the thrill of battling wild foes. We also are big Super Smash Brothers fans and took inspiration from Smash Bros. 100 man melee mode. Selfie Smackdown sprang from the idea: what if you could turn your friends (or even your favorite characters) into pint-sized adversaries and take them on in an over-the-top brawl? Mixing the personal touch of selfies with fast-paced VR combat felt like the perfect recipe for unforgettable multiplayer fun.

What It Does

Selfie Smackdown; via the companion website, you simply upload a photo, Once you’re in VR, waves of mini-enemies—bearing your customized headgear—rush at you from every direction. Your mission? Smack them down before they smother you!

How We Built It

  • Unity & XR Foundation: Using Unity’s XR Interaction Toolkit, we built fully immersive arenas optimized for Meta Quest headsets. Custom shaders bring out the personality in each mini-enemy, while physics-based animations make every hit and block feel weighty.
  • AI-Driven Enemy Behavior: Our AI module uses pathfinding to create dynamic hordes that adapt to player movement
  • Companion Website: Built with Next JS with a seamless smooth user experience. The images handled through Supabase which stores and serves the images for the VR game.

Challenges We Overcame

  • Computer Hardware: We spent most of our time trouble shooting various errors and admin restrictions to test our game
  • Unity Errors: We also spent a descent chunk of our time traversing Unity for the first time adn rand into several unexpected errors.

Accomplishments We’re Proud Of

  • End-to-End Workflow: From web upload to in-VR action, we delivered a fully connected system that feels seamless—even to first-time users.
  • First-Time XR Developers: Our entire team dove headfirst into Unity and VR for the first time and emerged with a polished demo that we are proud of.

What’s Next for Selfie Smackdown

  • Expanded Enemy Roster & Boss Fights: shield-bearers, kamikaze sprinters, and towering bosses with multi-stage health bars.
  • Progression & Leveling: Players will earn XP to unlock new weapons, power-ups, and special “ultimate smashes” for when the horde really overwhelms them.
  • Custom Arena Builder: A future update will let players create and share their own battlegrounds, complete with environmental hazards and trap mechanics.
