Inspiration

Small local businesses offer unique experiences and benefits that large corporations lack. They benefit our local economy and community by fostering stronger bonds and providing accessable job opportunities. However, they struggle to market to their customer base and end up hiding in the shadows of larger corporations. This discourages small business and hinders our growth as a community and in turn our economy. On the other side of the equation, due to the prevalance of technology in our daily lives and how it connects us to the corners of the earth electronically with just a click of a button, our current generations are stuck at home because of convenience, even if they are bored! So! This is where Memory Lane swoops to the rescue!

What it does

Memory Lane is a mobile app that helps users create timeless moments by discovering hidden gems in their local community — whether it's a cozy coffee shop, an art boutique, or a vintage arcade around the corner, we believe unforgettable experiences aren't just far away — they're down the street, waiting to be found. We are specifically targeting individuals looking for something to do and struggling local businesses trying to reach their targeted audience. Both parties can be matched according to what the business offers and what the user is interested in. The customers have a swipe feature--swiping left means uninterested and swiping right means interested--where they can choose their local businesses and match with them, encouraging customers to visit them. For each small business the user supports, they earn points that are exchangeable for deals and rewards. This encourages the return of the customers, results in happy people on both ends!

How we built it

We built the backened with React and JavaScript/Typescript and designed the UI with React Native and Figma for the mobile app. We also incorporated Nessie API for the user transactions and use python algorithms to find patterns in the users activity to recommend better suited businesses to the right users.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges that we ran into were connecting and learning how to use the Nessie API, building the database, and getting our mobile app to work as intended.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Most of our team only had experience with vanilla JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, so experimenting with frameworks such as React and React Native to finally find a process that worked optimally for our purposes was a wild ride, but one that ultimately paid off. We're proud of our progress in implementing the MVP of our first mobile app using React Native and Expo within 24 hours.

What we learned

We learned that team development is a process. One that has its lows and lulls, as well as its highs and progression! WeHack allowed us to not only expand our technical knowledge, but also our interpersonal skills, time management, and perseverance in the face of obstacles. We have grown both as developers and as people.

What's next for Memory Lane

Memory Lane will grow further as a mobile app for our idea of connecting with local businesses, strengthening relationships and communities, and creating new connections with others while having fun all at the same time!
