Inspiration

Reflecting on my journey through the complexities of first-year life, I understood the challenge of forging meaningful connections amidst the myriad of events scattered across UofT's campus. Juggling multiple social media platforms to track down events became overwhelming, leaving me yearning for a simpler solution.

Focusing on productivity and minimizing distractions, I envisioned a centralized platform where all UofT events could be easily accessible. Thus, UofT Events was born - a space where students can effortlessly discover, register for, and engage with campus activities without the hassle of endless scrolling.

What it does

Our platform is a game-changer for the UofT community, revolutionizing the way students engage with campus life:

By consolidating all events into one dynamic platform, we've created a powerhouse of information, eliminating the hassle of searching multiple sources. Everything you need to know, from club meetings to campus-wide festivities, is at your fingertips.

But that's not all. We've taken it further by introducing a groundbreaking feature: study group matchmaking. Say goodbye to the struggle of finding study partners. With our innovative system, students can effortlessly connect with like-minded peers, forming study groups tailored to their academic needs.

Innovation is at the heart of what we do, and our platform is proof of that. It's not just a tool—it's a game-changer, empowering UofT students to make the most of their university experience like never before.

How we built it

In our solution, we've leveraged the React framework to develop the frontend, providing a dynamic and responsive user interface. The frontend interacts seamlessly with the AWS backend through HTTP requests sent to an AWS API Gateway. Upon receiving these requests, the API Gateway triggers AWS Lambda functions, which handle the incoming events. These Lambda functions then execute various tasks using a range of AWS services, ensuring efficient processing and response to frontend requests. This architecture enables the smooth integration of frontend and backend components, resulting in a robust and scalable solution.

Challenges we ran into

Navigating the intricacies of front-end development was just one facet of our journey. As newcomers to database management, we encountered another significant challenge: setting up and managing our database infrastructure. Given our limited experience in this area, we faced a steep learning curve in understanding database concepts and selecting the appropriate tools for our needs.

In pursuing a scalable and reliable solution, we turned to Amazon Web Services (AWS) for database hosting. Despite being new to database management, we recognized the benefits of AWS's robust infrastructure and intuitive services. Leveraging AWS's platform, we set up and configured our database environment, learning the ropes through experimentation and guidance from online resources.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our first major milestone was successfully launching a working website. From the initial concept to the final product, we dedicated ourselves to creating a platform that meets the needs of our users. Overcoming numerous challenges along the way, we're thrilled to have delivered a fully functional website that represents the culmination of our hard work and dedication.

Another achievement we're proud of is creating a polished front-end interface. With a keen eye for design and a commitment to excellence, we crafted an aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly interface. Through careful attention to detail and iterative refinement, we've created an engaging user experience that reflects our dedication to quality.

Perhaps our most significant accomplishment is the execution of our innovative idea. We're proud to have taken a unique approach to addressing the challenge of event discovery and engagement at UofT. Our concept has sparked excitement and interest, positioning us as pioneers in revolutionizing campus connectivity.

What we learned

We've learned the importance of adaptability and flexibility in unexpected challenges. By remaining open-minded and willing to adjust our approach when necessary, we've overcome obstacles and achieved our goals.

Furthermore, our experience has underscored the value of effective teamwork. By collaborating closely with one another and leveraging each other's strengths, we've accomplished more than we ever could have.
