Inspiration

One of the biggest problems in the healthcare system today is the long wait-time to receive care.

I have experienced this issue first hand when I went to the emergency room suffering a sudden allergic reaction with hives and rashes covering my body. I spent over an hour waiting in a fully packed ER, and by the time I saw a doctor my hives had already disappeared. At that point I was told to take over the counter allergy medication and sent home with no explanation of what caused my allergic reaction or how to prevent it again.

This obviously left me frustrated, however I have to sympathize with the staff who had to deal with the countless number of patients becoming increasingly aggravated as time went on. As I have family members who work in the healthcare industry, I understand the stress that healthcare providers undergo, and the complications of working in the field.

For this project we wanted to develop a software solution to address the issue of wait-times in healthcare while considering both the perspectives of the healthcare provider, as well as the recipient.

What it does

MediQ is an application suite designed for hospitals which reduces the amount of time patients spend waiting to receive treatment. Our suite is separated into 3 components:

1. Patient Portal
  • Upon arriving to the hospital, patients scan their healthcard or enter their healthcard number into the system which will push them onto the waiting queue. Their healthcard contains basic patient information.

  • Patients are able to see the estimated wait times based on hospital capacity. Patients assigned a lower priority have the option to relocate to a less busy hospital.

2. Staff Portal
  • The triage nurse reviews the queue of patients and assesses their symptoms according to the CTAS standard. Utilizes Google Gemini to provide an estimated priority based on patients previous medical history.

  • The nurse is able to see basic patient information, and admit them to the hospital when resources are available. Staff is able to update patient symptoms, and keep track of the time they are reported

3. Patient Tracker
  • Family of patients will be able to sign in to the portal to view information such as Room Number, Visitation Hours, Current Patient Status, and Estimated Discharge Date
