Inspiration

In a world of fragmented health data and rapidly shifting medical landscapes, investors and researchers struggle to keep up. Global policy shifts, biotech funding booms, and scientific breakthroughs often go unnoticed or unverified. We wanted to build a platform that uses real-time, trustworthy AI to unify this information—and make it actionable. The Sonar API from Perplexity gave us the perfect foundation to create this healthcare intelligence radar.

What it does

MedIntel World is a global healthcare investment radar that lets users:

🌍 Explore an interactive map of regional medical trends and biotech funding
🔍 Use real-time search powered by the Sonar API to uncover verified insights
📚 View citation-backed summaries of funding rounds, policy changes, and medical innovations
💡 Personalize their radar based on topic, region, or stakeholder perspective
📈 Track innovation hotspots and capital flows in biotech and healthcare

How we built it

Frontend: Built with Next.js and Mapbox for an intuitive, geospatial interface
Backend: Serverless functions hosted on Vercel, integrating with the Sonar API
Authentication: Implemented with NextAuth.js for secure, multi-provider login
Database: PostgreSQL hosted on NeonDB, used for storing user data and preferences
APIs: The core of our intelligence layer is powered by the Perplexity Sonar API, providing real-time, semantically relevant, and citation-backed data

Challenges we ran into

🔄 Real-time data parsing: Translating Sonar API responses into clean, geolocated insights required designing a robust data pipeline.
🗺️ Mapbox integration: Coordinating search results with interactive map layers was technically tricky.
🔐 Auth flows: Configuring dynamic server-side auth using NextAuth.js with serverless endpoints had some deployment quirks on Vercel.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a fully functional MVP with real-time data, maps, and citations—all within the hackathon window
Created a smooth user experience with clean filtering and intuitive regional navigation
Successfully harnessed the power of the Sonar API to deliver valuable insights, not just summaries

The Sonar API is incredibly powerful for building real-time, trustworthy apps with verifiable sources
Geospatial healthcare data can be made intuitive with the right UX and tooling
Serverless and edge-function workflows are great for scaling early-stage prototypes
