Inspiration

Imagine Maria, a nurse in a small town in Latin America, who faced a heart-wrenching incident with her patient Carlos due to a medication error caused by the lack of interoperability between clinical history systems. Such errors are not isolated incidents. In fact, studies show that the lack of interoperability in healthcare significantly contributes to medical errors and fragmented care. In Latin America, the situation is particularly acute, with often incompatible health information systems, hindering timely and accurate access to patient information.

Against this backdrop, we introduce 'HealthWeb5', our innovative Web5-based solution for clinical history management. HealthWeb5 offers a decentralized and secure platform, enabling healthcare professionals like Maria to access and share crucial medical information, regardless of the systems used by different hospitals. This complete interoperability could have not only prevented Carlos's critical situation but also improves efficiency and accuracy in healthcare across the region.

Our sustainable business model, based on flexible subscriptions for health institutions and advanced data analysis services, ensures the long-term viability of HealthWeb5. We are committed not just to improving healthcare, but to forging a safer and more connected future for digital health in Latin America, benefiting patients and professionals like Maria and Carlos.

What it does

MediDecentra offers a decentralized platform for managing medical records, utilizing cutting-edge Web5 technology. It ensures seamless interoperability between various healthcare systems, allowing for real-time, secure access to patient data. This system significantly reduces medical errors, improves treatment outcomes, and enhances the overall efficiency of healthcare delivery.

How we built it

We built MediDecentra using a combination of React and Web5 technologies, focusing on creating distinct platforms tailored to the specific needs of each user type: patients, doctors, and laboratory technicians. React's dynamic and component-based architecture allowed us to develop an intuitive and responsive user interface, while Web5's decentralized approach ensured secure and autonomous data management.

For patients, we designed a user-friendly platform where they can access their complete medical history, including diagnoses, treatments, and lab results. This platform empowers patients to be more involved in their healthcare journey by providing them with direct access to their medical records.

For doctors, we developed a system that enables them to add and modify notes, prescribe treatments, and upload various documents related to patient care. This platform is designed to streamline the process of updating and maintaining comprehensive patient records, improving the efficiency of patient care.

Laboratory technicians have a specialized platform where they can create and upload documents, including medical images, directly to the patient's history. This integration ensures that all relevant medical information is consolidated and easily accessible to authorized personnel.

Each platform was developed with a keen focus on user experience, ensuring that the different systems are not only functional but also intuitive and easy to navigate. Given the time constraints of the event, we concentrated on establishing the core functionalities for each platform, laying a solid foundation for future enhancements and additional features.

Challenges we ran into

One of our foremost challenges was developing a multi-user, interoperable system using React. React's component-based architecture, while efficient for building scalable user interfaces, posed complexities when integrating with various healthcare IT systems. Ensuring seamless communication and data exchange between different users, such as doctors, hospitals, and laboratories, required meticulous planning and execution.

Additionally, creating a robust and flexible data structure for medical records was a significant challenge. The data structure needed to be comprehensive enough to encapsulate all aspects of a clinical history, including diagnoses, treatments, and lab results, while also being adaptable to various healthcare providers' systems. Achieving this within the limited timeframe of event was ambitious, and thus, we had to prioritize foundational elements of the data structure, leaving room for future expansion and refinement.

Ensuring that each user type – doctors, hospitals, and laboratories – had appropriate and secure access to the necessary data added another layer of complexity. Balancing the ease of access with the highest levels of data security and privacy remains an ongoing challenge. Due to the event's time constraints, we focused on establishing basic access controls, planning to develop more advanced and nuanced permission settings in future iterations.

Developing a system capable of storing, managing, and securely sharing diverse data types across different medical facilities required innovative thinking. Given the event's duration, we were able to lay the groundwork for this functionality, identifying it as a key area for future development to fully realize the system's potential.
