Inspiration
After the pandemic, we saw that there was an impact on mental health and small businesses, both emotionally and financially. We decided to tackle both of these problems in a single user-friendly intuitive web application.
What it does
MediCalm connects individuals struggling with mental health issues with small businesses in the community that offer mental health support, positively impacting both members and community businesses. There is also a filtering system for specific types of mental health issues that community members are affected by. There are also multiple parts of the web app that show business information for marketing.
How we built it
Using MongoDB as a database for the back-end, we used JavaScipt with VSCode to create a full-stack application with professional and secure authentication in conjunction with Bootstrap and Bcrypt.
Challenges we ran into
Solidifying the idea to make the biggest impact possible was one of our biggest goals. We eventually solved this through brainstorming and really honing in on this passion of ours. From the code side of things, we ran into an issue with running all of the back-end databases on some of our team members' computers but we worked through it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our idea isn't just an app to solve a problem. We contribute to lessening some of the biggest issues in our community that are related, even if that isn't very easy to see. We are able to help people on a personal level and let someone's business strive (eg. the monetary and customary benefit the business gets from the customer).
What we learned
We learned how to incorporate MongoDB using Homebrew to create a safe back-end. We also learned how to make a calming and aesthetically pleasing application packed with functionality.
What's next for MediCalm
Machine Learning algorithms can be implemented to help analyze user data to recommend small businesses that can best target their specific type of mental health issue.
