What Inspired Us

Medication management is often confusing, overwhelming, and high-risk—especially for patients juggling multiple prescriptions, dealing with complex medical jargon, or facing language barriers. We were inspired by real-world challenges faced by patients and caregivers who struggle to keep track of treatment plans, medication interactions, and essential precautions. Errors in medication use can lead to severe health risks, and we wanted to create a tool that empowers patients to make informed decisions about their health.

What We Learned

Throughout this project, we explored how technology can bridge gaps in healthcare accessibility. We learned about:

The severity of medication-related errors and how they impact patient trust. The importance of user-friendly design for non-tech-savvy users. How AI and computer vision can assist in medical verification and safety. The challenges of accurate medical translations and the role of language models in healthcare accessibility.

How We Built MedicMate

To create a seamless, accessible, and intelligent medication management system, we leveraged a combination of frontend, backend, AI, and cloud technologies:

Frontend: Developed using React.js and Next.js, ensuring a dynamic and responsive user experience.
Backend: Built with Python to handle OCR processing, medication verification, and API requests efficiently.
Database & Authentication: Used Supabase, an open-source Firebase alternative, for user authentication, data storage, and real-time syncing.
OCR & Computer Vision: Integrated Tesseract OCR
Machine Learning & Data Analysis: Leveraged Kaggle datasets
Type Safety & Scalability: Used TypeScript to ensure maintainability and reduce potential errors across the application.

Handling Different Image Formats: Ensuring reliable text extraction from prescription images, especially across JPEG, PNG, AVIF, and other formats.
Optimizing OCR Accuracy: Enhancing text recognition in poor lighting conditions, blurry images, or distorted fonts.
Interpreting Medical Terminology: Making complex medical terms easy to understand without oversimplifying critical information.
Balancing Privacy & Accessibility: Designing a system that is secure and HIPAA-compliant while remaining user-friendly.

Conclusion

MedicMate is more than just an app—it’s a step toward patient empowerment in healthcare. By combining AI-driven insights, medication safety checks, and accessible design, we aim to give users control over their treatment journey. While this is just the beginning, we are excited about the potential impact of MedicMate in reducing medication errors, improving patient awareness, and restoring trust in healthcare systems.
