Inspiration

We noticed how slow, fragmented, and insecure medical record systems are today, patients wait weeks for transfers, hospitals own the data instead of the patient, and fraud can go undetected. We wanted a system where people finally have full control over their own health information.

What it does

MedaWallet gives patients complete ownership of their medical records by storing them on a secure blockchain. It allows instant (3–5 second) record transfers, prevents fraud through immutable entries, and provides a unified medical history accessible across all providers with patient permission.

How we built it

We created an app through ReactNative and used XRP Ledgers.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into several challenges while building MedaWallet. Implementing blockchain functionality inside a React Native environment was difficult, especially getting real-time updates from the doctor’s side to instantly appear on the patient’s device. We also had to learn how to interact with XRPL ledgers, manage private keys securely, and structure medical data so it could be written immutably on-chain while still displaying cleanly in the app. On top of that, handling permissions, wallet connections, and syncing state across devices pushed us to learn a lot about React Native architecture and blockchain integration.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built a system where patients truly control their data, transfers happen in seconds instead of weeks, and medical fraud becomes nearly impossible. We also created a unified record system that works across all providers, regardless of their EMR platform.

What we learned

We learned how to build a real blockchain-backed application from the ground up, everything from working with React Native to reading and writing data to the XRPL ledger. We also gained experience with secure key management, on-chain data structures, and syncing updates between doctors and patients in real time. Beyond the technical side, we learned the business realities of healthcare: how medical records are handled, why transfers take weeks, and where fraud and data ownership issues come from. Putting all of that together showed us not just how to build MedaWallet, but why it needs to exist.

What's next for MedaWallet

Next, we plan to expand MedaWallet by integrating more provider networks and building a seamless doctor onboarding system. We also want to add features like encrypted doctor–patient messaging, emergency access controls, and deeper XRPL smart-contract automation for handling permissions. Long-term, our goal is to pilot MedaWallet in real clinics, refine the user experience, and move toward becoming the universal standard for patient-owned medical records.
