Inspiration

The inspiration for Mecca Mentor came from a desire to enhance the Howard University community's experience by providing a digital assistant that offers instant access to campus information, resources, and support, reflecting the vibrant spirit and rich heritage of "The Mecca."

What It Does

Mecca Mentor acts as an interactive guide for students, faculty, and visitors, answering queries about academic programs, campus events, navigation, and more. It simplifies access to information, making university life more navigable and enjoyable.

How We Built It

We developed Mecca Mentor by integrating AI and natural language processing technologies to understand and respond to user intents. The front end was designed with a focus on UI/UX, ensuring it's user-friendly, while the backend involves dynamic data retrieval from various sources and converting URLs into HTML for seamless information access.

Challenges We Ran Into

Integrating diverse data sources, enhancing the chatbot's natural language understanding, and ensuring scalability under high demand were significant challenges. Overcoming these required innovative technical solutions and optimization strategies.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

Successfully deploying a fully functional chatbot, achieving real-time integration with Howard's data ecosystems, and significantly improving the user experience stand out as our proudest accomplishments. Moreover, the positive feedback from early users and the team's growth in technical and collaborative skills are equally rewarding.

What We Learned

We learned the importance of iterative testing and user feedback in refining AI functionalities, the challenges of managing and integrating diverse data sources, and the value of teamwork and resilience in overcoming development obstacles.

What's Next for Mecca Mentor

Future plans include expanding Mecca Mentor's question-answering capabilities, integrating additional university services, and enhancing its AI to offer more personalized user experiences. We aim to continually improve Mecca Mentor, making it an ever more essential part of the Howard University community.
