Inspiration

As we worked towards finishing up our high school career, we as a group noticed some of our peers falling behind and becoming disorganized and discouraged. We were inspired to put together an app that could help prevent this from worsening, and this led to the creation of Mavericks ROAR.

What it does

Our app is a multi-purpose organizational tool for students in our community. It allows students to set up reminders, a to-do list, a calendar to keep track of all their schoolwork and prepare to complete it in a timely manner, and more features such as the ability to report issues and log in to your own personalized account. Unlike any other software, ours enables users to have a more welcoming experience where they can locate anything they seek for. For instance, the main page includes a greeting with their name. Instead of downloading many applications, users may just download one that has all of the necessary school tools.

How we built it

We built this app using the MIT app inventor, a software made for developing Android apps. We used coding to assemble the entirety of the app from the ground up and used a variety of tools provided by the software to make our app more user-friendly and unique. We have it easy for individuals to access any item needed from the main page. We've added icons to the majority of our app to make it easier to use.

Challenges we ran into

We had some trouble learning how to build an app from scratch, and our group faced a period of difficulty as we learned how to use the software. We had to seek help from those more experienced than us, through teachers and interns, and through the help of some other students.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re extremely proud of our app now that it’s finished and all the bugs are worked out, and we’re proud to have the opportunity and the skills readily available to be able to help our community. The most difficult part of our app was the announcements section of our app. We initially experienced issues with the chat not being displayed, then we encountered issues with the app retrieving the name, and finally, we experienced issues sending out the announcements-related notifications. Nevertheless, we were able to promptly resolve the announcement-section problem in the end. We also take pride in our ability to work as a group and contribute our skills to the project.

What we learned

This project has definitely been a huge learning experience for all of us, as we’ve worked to learn the necessary skills needed to create the app and the pitch. This project has also required us to work with a number of people who we likely wouldn’t have met otherwise, which taught us a lot about our community and only served to deepen our passion for the project. Additionally, several of our members were learning how to code and program for the first time. Before this, we never would have come together to learn how to code or create an app.

What's next for Mavericks ROAR

Following this project, Mavericks ROAR will continue to work in the community to uplift our fellow students and encourage them to continue taking an organized approach toward finishing their degrees. The next step for Maverick News would have to be adding another section to add important links where students can come and press the link they want. The links would include Moodle, NCEdCloud, scholarships, and our school websites. Due to time, we didn’t have enough time to add all the things we wanted to add. As it took us some time to learn to code since we as a team are beginners at coding.
