Inspiration
With how inflation has driven prices of food up, it has become harder for many to find high quality, fresh seasonal food at low prices. We came up with Market Fresh, a website/app that can be used to find out what produce is currently in season, as well as recipes that make use of seasonal produce. This way, you can find fresh food at low prices, while supporting your local farmers and businesses!
What it does
Market Fresh will show you what seasonal produce is currently available, along with multiple recipes that include the current seasonal produce. You can save both produce and recipes in the favourites tab for easy viewing later. You can also find out what local vendors are near you selling locally produced food using the local vendors tab.
How we built it
We came up with the purpose and did some research to understand better the problem we were trying to solve. Then we mapped out the functionality and began creating a rough sketch of the product. We built a mockup on Figma using library components. Then we translated the Figma mockup to HTML, used CSS and Bootstrap to style the page, and incorporated Javascript events into the page. We didn’t build a database because we didn’t have extensive data manipulation or storage needs for this iteration of the product. We used Github for version control and collaboration.
Challenges we ran into
We originally planned for Market Fresh to be a native application on Android and IOS, but due to time constraints, we instead made a mobile-friendly website, as well as a Figma mockup of how our mobile application would look like. We also wanted to fully integrate location determination of local vendors using Google Maps API, but once again, due to time constraints, we could not fully implement this feature.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of our concept, learning more about coding, and challenging ourselves to use Github throughout the entire project. None of us knew Bootstrap going into this and we are proud of how much we were able to incorporate it into the project.
What we learned
Bootstrap was extremely helpful to us in making our website look more aesthetically pleasing. Version control is your best friend, and file organization is even more important when working in teams.
What's next for Market Fresh
We hope to create full-fledged mobile app versions of Market Fresh for IOS and Android, and flesh out the local vendors feature using Google Maps API. We would also like to add more features and improve the app's functionality, accessibility, and interface design.
