Inspiration
I am not great at geography, but I want to travel the world!
But how do I travel the world when I don't know the geography?
Do I go through the million fake instagram reels? Do I open a map and just look for things, but what am I looking for? Do I wait for my friends to travel first?
NO to all! It is not easy to find and understand this big earth, so why not play a game and build our knowledge in a fun way! Introducing MapScape
What it does?
It makes you discover a random place on this earth.
Players are given one of the two types of clue:
- A summary of the location
- Type of place in a continent
Based on this clue player can make a can guess the location in the input box Player can click on the map to know how far they are from the location
- A red box suggests - Player is > 1000km away from the destination
- A violet box suggests - Player is 1000km from the destination
- A blue box suggests - Player is 10km from the destination
- A yellow box suggests - Player is within the range
- A green box suggests - Player WON! Player can click on the map to find near by locations and click on the nearby locations to make a guess as well. Player also have additional clues to help deduce the location more.
How we built it?
The app selects a random continent, then a country, then a place type and search for places associated to them. Once a random location is selected, player has clue to deduce. The boxes are generated using polyline, and players are free to move around the world. The autocomplete guess, or map click or nearby locations data make it easy to find how far the player is from the destination. Additional clues are gathered from search text of location.
What's next for MapScape
This project was divided into two types of games. However, I was only able to do part 1. I hit a roadblock on part two when I could not remove the markers from the map. I wanted to create polygon on famous monuments and allow players to guess them. However, creating a polygon is redundant when a marker already says the name of the monument. I did not have enough time to understand whether this feature was available or unavailable. But if it available then that is next in plan.
Challenges I ran into
As mentioned before, removing markers from the map.
Accomplishments that I am proud of
- I pulled of a project in 3 days.
- I was able to do 80% of what I envisioned for the game.
What I learned?
Hackathon gave me a great experience I have worked with google maps long time back professionally, but this time I learnt how to work with 3D maps and incorporate it with Place search.
