Inspiration
We were inspired to create Map My Escape as a way to keep people informed about environmental risks in their local area, with a focus on fast and efficient communication.
What it does
Map My Escape allows users to sign up with their phone number and receive personalized alerts based on their location within a 20 mile radius. Users are prompted to send their location via text message and then receive alerts based on the PredictHQ Severe Weather API.
How we built it
We used Wix for the frontend and built the backend using node.js, express.js, and MongoDB. We integrated the Twilio and Cohere APIs to send and summarize text messages, respectively.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was integrating multiple APIs together to create a cohesive user experience. Another challenge was getting the Wix frontend to connect with our custom backend. Despite these difficulties, we persevered and ultimately succeeded in creating a working prototype.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of getting more familiarized with version control in a team environment and overcoming the challenges that came with integrating multiple APIs. We also improved our communication skills and learned how to work together more efficiently as a team.
What we learned
We gained a better understanding of version control (Git, GitHub), integrating multiple APIs, and the importance of clear communication in a team environment. We also learned how to connect Wix with our custom backend, which was a valuable learning experience.
What's next for Map My Escape
Moving forward, we see a lot of potential for Map My Escape to become a useful tool for keeping people informed about environmental risks in their area. We hope to continue developing and improving the app to better serve our communities.
