Inspiration

Feeling stressed, moody, or lethargic? Getting cramps a week before your period? Craving something on your period? As women who have been on the menstrual cycle every single day of our lives, we understand the constant fluctuation of our hormones, energy levels, and moods. We wanted a tool that recognizes the different phases of the menstrual cycle and addresses the nutritional needs of our body based on our age, BMI, and ethnicity to improve our overall well-being. Research shows that it all comes down to your nutrition. Certain foods combined with some exercises, and activities can significantly improve mood stability, soothe cramps, and boost energy levels. Lunari is here to do exactly this.

What it does

Lunari considers your age, BMI, ethnicity, and last known period to understand your current menstrual cycle phase. Based on these factors and the critical nutrients your body needs, it provides personalized meal recommendations. Ethnicity is relevant in terms of nutrient deficiencies/ choices related to genetics and dietary patterns. Additionally, Lunari addresses cravings, mood, and cramps, offering tailored suggestions when you're stressed or experiencing discomfort. If you're craving something specific, it also provides nutritious alternatives that align with your body’s needs.

How we built it

Utilized Figma for front-end design. Used Python libraries: Scikit-learn for model building. NumPy for data manipulation and analysis. Pandas for data manipulation and analysis. Matplotlib for data visualization. Developed a custom dataset for the machine learning model. Employed Git and GitHub for version control and collaboration.

Challenges we ran into

Ensuring the data was properly adjusted for skewness required a deep understanding of statistical methods and the specific nutrient needs associated with different ethnicities. Additionally, researching multiple sources to gather reliable information added complexity, as it involved verifying data accuracy and relevance for the model. This process was essential to build a robust and effective machine learning model that could deliver personalized recommendations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully developed a custom machine learning model that takes into account ethnicity, genetics, and general diet to provide tailored meal recommendations. This unique model recognizes the body's increased nutrient needs during the menstrual cycle, delivering meals with the ideal nutrient ratio to support overall health.

What we learned

This project deepened our understanding of the intersection between technology and health, highlighting the potential for data-driven solutions in personalized nutrition.

What's next for Lunari

We plan to convert Lunari into a fully functional mobile app, enhancing accessibility and user experience. Future features will include personalized fitness level assessments, allowing users to receive tailored meal and exercise recommendations.
