Inspiration
Our goal was to create a simulation that highlights the impact of decision-making on global CO₂ emissions. We wanted to educate players on how different policies and initiatives can influence climate change, empowering them with knowledge on how to make a difference in the real world. By allowing players to experiment with strategies for reducing emissions, we hope to foster a greater understanding of the complexities of climate action.
What it does
In this game, you take on the role of a global advisor responsible for combating climate change. To influence worldwide emissions, you must acquire different countries, each with unique environmental policies, energy sources, and challenges. Once a country is under your control, you make strategic decisions on policies, investments, and sustainability efforts to push the world closer to net-zero emissions. The game provides a dynamic simulation of how different choices impact global carbon output, allowing players to experiment with real-world climate strategies in a virtual setting.
How we built it
Our team collaborated by dividing the workload into different aspects of the game:
Visuals & Storyline: One team member focused on designing maps and crafting meaningful choices for players to make. Backend Development: Two members handled the backend, with one working on the database and the other developing the core game mechanics. Frontend Development: Another team member took charge of the user interface, ensuring smooth interactions and an engaging gameplay experience.
Challenges we ran into
One of the major hurdles we faced was connecting to MongoDB Atlas. Despite multiple attempts, we encountered persistent connection issues, which required significant troubleshooting and problem-solving. This challenge delayed some parts of the project, but we adapted and worked around the issue to keep progressing. We couldn't achieve data scraping due to needing subscriptions or the site not allowing to be scraped
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built a realistic simulation of CO₂ emissions from various countries, accurately reflecting real-world climate data. We developed an engaging and educational gameplay experience that allows players to explore different climate policies. our team also won GeoGuessr and the tallest tower of cans challenge during the event!
What we learned
Throughout the development process, we gained deeper insights into real-world climate data. Researching emissions from different countries and analysing existing climate initiatives was interesting—we were surprised by many of the steps already being taken to combat climate change globally. This project expanded our understanding of environmental policies and the complexities involved in reducing carbon emissions.
What's next for Luca
We have several exciting plans for the future of the game, including:
Multiplayer Mode: Introducing a multiplayer feature where players can compete or collaborate to combat climate change. AI Opponents: Adding AI-controlled opponents to make the game more challenging and dynamic. Expanded Decision-Making: Implementing more complex scenarios and policy choices to further enhance the simulation’s realism and educational value.
