Inspiration
1984 by George Orwell, Papers Please (a censorship game)
What it does
The game begins with a title screen, where a "Click Start" button is pressed to lead the player to the software's main screen. There are a few instructions for the censorship bot (the player), and the company logo as a constant reminder of the player's job. The game then inputs an email from Mitchell (a soldier) or Shaista (his wife) and it is the player's job to to manipulate the output (censor the message) by selecting the option to (via button) and sending the censored message back. The game runs through a series of emails between the two and continues to misconstrue their words as the story goes on.
How I built it
We attended a workshop where we learned how to use Repl.it for html, css, and javascript. We then used these three languages in Repl.it to create the game.
Challenges I ran into
We had trouble making the backgrounds switch, but the largest challenge was learning from scratch with no prior experience. Centering text and images in CSS took us a great deal of time, and the buttons were hard to make work with all the divs we needed to create.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
It functions pretty well, which is great since this is our first time coding.
What I learned
We learned how to use basic coding, because prior to the hackathon none of our team members had coded before
What's next for Love, Mitchell
Further development into the plot, as we explore the information controlling, dystopian society that our characters operate in.
