LookBack feature (collection of past posts and media) in the jptdr Circle
Watch our Elevator Pitch!
Inspiration
BeReal was the main inspiration behind this project. We wanted to make an app that builds on the authenticity and simplicity provided by BeReal's concept of unfiltered photos of people's daily lives. As for the name, if you know you know... Only kidding! We also took inspiration from the boldly introspective manga Look Back for our project's name and visual language.
What it does
Beyond the basic functions of social media, LookBack strengthens communities through weekly missions that encourage collaboration and retrospective "look backs" on posted snapshots, kindles new bonds by connecting people with similar interests and aspects of life, and promotes authenticity by keeping record of our day-to-day lives.
Functionality
Users are able to create and join communities referred to as Circles where they can opt in to receive notifications for when members post, collaborate with one another to fulfill a weekly mission, and of course communicate through text and media. Posts within Circles that satisfy a mission are automatically tagged with the unique mission tag, e.g. weeklyMissionKaraoke, with the option to add more to a) remember the experience when looking back and b) potentially connecting with other users and communities.
The consistent flow of posts within a community is our app's key to strengthening bonds.
As individuals, users can also post their day-to-day lives with the option to share their posts with the world. Post captions are capped at 256 characters for the sake of minimizing fluff for authenticity. Community posts show up in user's feeds as fostering communities is our priority.
Shared posts from users around the world can be accessed by searching for a tag in the search bar. Like other social media platforms, posts feature threaded comments and emote reactions for healthy and friendly interactions. Naturally, users can request to befriend one another or request to DM if they find another user's posts and/or profile interesting or relatable.
Safety
User accounts have badges that comprise of both mission badges, meta badges, and then safety badges. These safety badges cover the trustworthiness score of a user, which is reduced from 5 with increasing reports or violations of TOS or community guidelines (somewhat like Discord) and verification status. Suspicious accounts may be reported and reviewed by human moderators.
User accounts can optionally verify their identity with a government issued ID and photo which grants them the verified badge. Posts are automatically scanned by AI for any violations of TOS or community guidelines and will be appropriately handled according to the jurisdiction. When a case turns out to be undetermined, it is handed over to human moderators to make final judgements and issue warnings or account suspensions. Our app features protective measures everywhere to ensure the safety of our users.
How we built it
We initially drafted ideas in a Google Doc and wrote the basic functionality of important pages. We build the prototype through Figma, a collaborative interface design tool. We utilized online Figma libraries and used Figma’s Prototype feature to add functionality to our pages.
Challenges we ran into
It was challenging to narrow down the functions of the app. We didn’t want the user experience to feel too bogged down with a plethora of features, so we had to choose the most important ones to keep. Also, figuring out how to use libraries actually took a surprisingly long time, but it was certainly worth it. Probably. Hopefully!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This was both of our first times using Figma, so we are proud to have designed an entirely standalone and intuitive app prototype!!!
What we learned
We learned how to use Figma as a way to easily prototype an application. Because of Figma’s intuitive design, it was easy to understand how to use its features to create a semi functional app. This will be very helpful for future developer projects since it is a simple way of planning what would need to be implemented during programming.
What's next for LookBack
Only time will tell...!
