Inspiration
This was inspired by the recent Lunar New Year that many people, including our team members, celebrate. Lion dance is an important tradition in many cultures that combines music with dance and celebration.
What it does
You and your partner are at a city festival when you get approached an Ong Dia, who asks you to help save the festival by controlling one of the lions for the lion dance! One player controls the front of the lion with WASD, while the other player controls the back with the arrow keys, similar to real-life performances! You can watch the arrows on the fans in the bottom corners of the screen to copy the movements of the leader lion on the left. If you hit the correct moves on time with the music, you will accumulate good fortune and your score will go up. Perfect hits will give you even more points! You and your partner must work together to remember your moves and make the lion dance to the beat!
How we built it
We created the game in Unity and used Ibis Paint to draw all our assets. We used Musescore Studio 4 to compose our own music for the game, as well.
Challenges we ran into
We had a ton of fun rhythm game ideas in the beginning, so it was hard to narrow it down to just one concept. It was also a challenge to keep all our assets organized at first, but we figured it out haha! And in terms of music, it was tricky to design the music in a way to fit the gameplay (repeat-after-me style) but not sound too repetitive.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We learned a lot about Unity and tools and merged our ideas well. We are passionate about rhythm games and have always wanted to make one, and we are happy to make one with a theme like this. We even had our team members write "Happy Lunar New Year" in their respective languages for some background art! :)
What we learned
To build our game, we learned a lot of skills for the first time (making a game in Unity, making beat maps, animating sprites, and more). For one of our team members, it was their first time participating in a hackathon! We learned the best ways to manage a short-term project (frequent progress check-ins, out-of-chair food and exercise breaks, and patience).
What's next for Lion Dance
We would love to add more levels, as well as a custom color selector for the lions. Adding hold notes would also make the gameplay more interesting!
