Inspiration
We wanted to make something that all members of our team can contribute to, as our computing experiences are drastically different. During our discussions we bounced dozens of potential ideas that were eventually scraped due to considerations of time, and in the end we went with a logic-based game. There's no need for us to created characters, not a whole lot of coding (in theory) since it would be simple true-or-false logic, and we can have time to focus on more important aspects of the project. Our final idea, Lights On, perfectly fits with these criteria, and we were able to build our game from there.
What it does
Lights On is a simple logic puzzle game that features a combination of light bulbs and switches. Each switch controls a unique combination of bulbs, so activating or deactivating a certain switch will change the status of some amount of bulbs (on to off, or off to on). The goal of each level is to turn all the bulbs on. There are currently five levels, with the first being the tutorial and the rest getting gradually more challenging. The player should think carefully and map out their moves in order to complete the game.
How we built it
We split the workload between our four team members based on our strengths. One of us worked on the graphics, one did the coding, one worked on game design, and one did the sound effects and tutorial. We would work on our individual branches and meet up every few hours to check progress and combine our work.
Challenges we ran into
The hardest part was deciding on what to do, as we spent quite some time discussing an idea given no specifics. We also faced minor inconveniences on each of our individual work, but we were able to tackle them with the help of each other.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are glad that our team planning were able to work out, and each member were able to play a role in the completion of this project despite our differences in skills. We are also happy that our team has good communication between the members, and were able to help each other solve problems as quickly as they appear.
What's next for Lights On!
There are lots of potential with the future of this game, such as more challenging levels, new concepts that shifts the rules, and much more. We also originally had an idea of coming up with an algorithm that would allow the computer to randomly generate levels, however we weren't able to finish that given the amount of time.
