Inspiration
My inspiration for this app stems from me being a big advocate for health, wellness, and taking care of my body. By making this app, I am taking a unique approach to promoting health. I believe that when someone knows how their actions affect their life expectancy, that person will be motivated to make changes to live a longer, healthier, and happier life.
What it does
This app calculates a person's life expectancy based on a variety of factors. Then, the app gives the user suggestions on how to improve his/her life expectancy according to the user's data.
How I built it
I built this app using the Swift programming language, an API, lots of calculations, and Xcode of course. :)
Challenges I ran into
I ran into the challenge of determining whether or not to use a plist or an API to retrieve baseline life expectancy values (which are based merely on a person's date of birth, gender, and where they live). I ended up finding an API that works! So, through code, I added and subtracted to this baseline life expectancy value (retrieved from the API) depending on more specific information about the user - like whether or not the user flosses every day, for instance.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm proud of this app because it's the most challenging project I have ever taken on, and I was able to complete it in just eight weeks! I am also very proud that this app already has over 1,000 downloads.
What I learned
I learned how to implement an API, expand my knowledge on Xcode and its functionalities, and see a project through from start to finish with persistence and consistent problem solving.
What's next for LifExpectancy
I want to take LifExpectancy to the next level by seeking investors, implementing health-related advertisements, and making the calculations more precise. As of today (September 5, 2017), LifExpectancy has 1,138 downloads!! I am so excited to see where LifExpectancy will go from here!
