Inspiration
Governments even in countries widely considered to be free, have begun cracking down on books with controversial themes. This project seeks to spread accessibility to some of these texts in a discrete package. By placing these texts in a game it is less likely they will be found and burned making more accessible to the world.
What it does
LibRestricted is a virtual library and meeting spacer where users can read banned texts or texts which have been made less accessible.
How we built it
LibRestricted is built in Unity with the Mirror multiplayer framework. AWS hosts the central server, but users can also host their own servers as well.
Challenges we ran into
Initially we tried to store a database of books using CockroachDB but ultimately weren’t able to implement it, as the SQL library we used didn’t allow encrypted traffic.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The multiplayer aspect of the game works well and we are able to read an entire book without directly referring to a .pdf or website. We are proud of the progress we made over the hackathon
What we learned
We learned to compromise with elements of the project that weren't working and to stop trying to fruitlessly those elements to work.
What's next for LibRestricted
We plan to polish the game and would like to add more books as the list of banned books grows ever larger.
