About the Project: AI-Powered Personalized Career Path WebApp

Inspiration

Choosing the right career path can be overwhelming, especially with so many options and no clear guidance based on individual strengths. We wanted to build something that makes this process easier, smarter, and more personalized. Our goal was to help people discover what they're good at and match them with a career that fits — not just based on trends, but on their actual skills and interests.

The idea was inspired by our own experiences struggling to find direction, as well as seeing friends unsure about which skills to grow or what steps to take next.

What We Learned

This project helped us grow both technically and conceptually:

  • Learned how to collect and analyze user input in a meaningful way
  • Understood how AI can be used for career mapping and decision support
  • Explored how to build intuitive, engaging, and user-friendly UI/UX
  • Improved our ability to work as a team across design, development, and AI integration

How We Built It

Our web app consists of multiple components:

  • Frontend: Built using React and Tailwind CSS for a responsive, modern interface
  • Backend: Node.js with Express to handle data processing and API calls
  • AI Engine: A skill-analysis system powered by a custom-trained model using NLP, decision trees, and external APIs to suggest personalized career paths
  • Roadmap Generator: Uses AI to break the career journey into actionable levels or "stages", like a gamified roadmap

Challenges We Faced

  • Design Complexity: Translating the user’s skillset into meaningful AI input required deep planning and multiple iterations
  • AI Alignment: Making sure the AI suggested career paths that were accurate and realistic — not random or too generic
  • Gamification UX: Designing a roadmap that feels fun (like levels in a game) while remaining practical and useful
  • Integration Issues: Making the frontend, backend, and AI modules work together smoothly was a real challenge, especially under time pressure

We’d love to:

  • Add a resume builder based on the chosen career path
  • Integrate real-time job listings that match the user’s roadmap
  • Build a community space for shared learning and peer support
  • Partner with learning platforms for course discounts and certifications
