Inspiration
Level Up is a chrome extension that we built to gamify the lifelong pursuit of becoming the best version of you.
Over the course of the pandemic, we have become extremely dependent on technology to stay connected to the world around us. However, technology doubles down as a form of escapism and distraction from achieving the goals we care about.
We wanted to create a fun way for people to stay intentional about their goals and mindful of the ways that they’re spending their time. Built into the app are a few “stat points,” mirroring goals that are considered to be popular and objectively fulfilling.
How we built it
Chrome storage API to cache user information, mapped to the database which will store quest (task) info in Firestore. Front end was built in React.
Challenges we ran into
Realizing the concept as a chrome extension actually required us to jump through a few hoops to get it working with firebase + react. In future iterations, we may consider implementing the main functionality in a webapp, and directing the leisure site tracking functionality to the chrome extension.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
It was both of our first times working with React, so learning something new and getting it to work was very satisfying.
What's next for Level Up!
This is actually an idea that we want to see come to fruition so we can start using it in our daily lives. It's always nice to have a way to visualize progress. In the short amount of time we were given in this hackathon, we were already able to see many challenges in our current implementation and definitely want to iterate in the future.
