What inspired us

In the tech industry, layoffs are unfortunately becoming more common, and for managers, delivering this news is often described as the hardest moment in their entire career. According to Harvard Business Review, 78% of managers report experiencing extreme stress when delivering layoffs, yet most never receive proper training on how to handle these conversations empathetically and legally.

We decided to develop “Let’s Terminate” because no one should walk into these highly emotional and legally risky conversations unprepared. As someone deeply involved in layoff tech, I wanted to create a tool that doesn’t just teach procedures but helps leaders build true empathy, resilience, and a strong sense of compliance through real practice.


What we built

Lets' Terminate is an immersive layoff conversation simulator designed for tech leaders. Built entirely with Bolt and powered by Tavus for real-time AI video interactions, Lets' Terminate allows managers to:

  • Select realistic personas — including variables like nationality, age, gender, pregnancy status, and more.
  • Experience real-time AI video conversations with emotional, human-like reactions using Tavus, replicating the high-pressure environment of real layoffs.
  • Receive instant feedback on empathy scores, legal compliance, and potential brand risks.
  • Analyze manager performance via an HR dashboard, highlighting problematic keywords (e.g., age-related or nationality-related comments) and identifying who needs further coaching.

How we built it

  • Bolt: Used for designing and building the entire UI/UX experience, from persona selection to HR dashboards.
  • Tavus: Integrated for generating highly realistic, emotionally rich AI video personas that react dynamically to manager input.
  • ElevenLabs: To generate highly emotional (anger, sadness, etc.) voice in realtime to used together with Tavus.
  • Gemini: Used for natural language understanding, generating feedback analysis, and identifying compliance risks.
  • State legal databases: Integrated references to show managers real-time legal risk alerts per state.

What we learned

  • The most effective empathy training requires more than static text or role-play — it needs true emotional immersion.
  • Many managers unintentionally use problematic language that can imply age, cultural, or gender bias. Visualizing this through feedback was eye-opening.
  • Combining Bolt's rapid prototyping with Tavus’s video AI capabilities allowed us to quickly iterate on realistic, emotionally impactful scenarios.

Challenges we faced

  • Designing AI personas that feel genuinely human and unpredictable, while remaining legally and ethically safe.
  • Balancing technical feasibility with emotional realism, especially under strict time constraints.
  • Ensuring seamless integration between Bolt and Tavus to maintain smooth, real-time video interactions.
