Inspiration

A common problem that we all notice in our university career is questions. A lot of us get asked questions by others, and oftentimes these questions are similar. Or the case may be that we are asking someone else, and they give us the same answer that they previously gave someone else. For example, within CP104 alone, we noticed that a large number of students were asking about the same error code, and the answer they were all looking for was also the same. We thought to ourselves, would it not be easier if there was a hub that would organize everything for the students? If you were to join the CP104 discord, you would see the same question asked ten times in a row or more. Would it not be much easier to simply have a hub similar to Stack Overflow, where students can ask one question, select a teacher, and before they hit enter they get suggestions to similar questions? Would it not be better if we had that for every course? It would help students get the answer in the quickest way possible, and save a lot of time when it comes to assignments and exam preparation.

What it does

This project consists of a website where student can fidn resources and a chat application to help with specific course questions, homework, assignments and socializing with others.

How we built it

The frontend for both the website and chat app is done my react, javascript, html/css and the backend for the chat app is authenticated by firebase.

Challenges we ran into

We faced some challenges implementing the authentication feature to the website and chat application via google/microsoft.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a fully functioning website and chat application with little to no prior knowledge in javascript/react as well as a space for students at Laurier where they can find help and get to know each other.

What we learned

We learned to work with react as a framework and improve on javascript skills which will be helpful for future projects and a good addition to our resumes for internships.

What's next for Laurier Student Study Hub

We are trying to promote this idea on social media to grow its popularity and for the website, we want to add testimonials to make it seem more professional and legitamite. As for the chat app, we are looking to implement some extra features such as video/voice calling and make it more efficient.
