Inspiration
It's 2024, and while we're scrolling through our social media feeds, our oceans are silently choking on microfibers. Every year, over 500,000 tons of microfibers—the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles—enter our oceans from the simple act of doing laundry. These tiny plastic particles are ingested by marine life, making their way up the food chain and onto our plates. The average person is unaware of this invisible threat, and current laundry habits are making the problem worse. We needed a solution that could make eco-friendly laundry practices as addictive as social media.
What it does
LaundroSnap is more than just a social app—it's a way to promote eco-friendly living through a fun and interactive platform. It turns laundry into a social experience, teaching users about microfiber pollution and motivating them to adopt sustainable habits.
How we built it
We developed LaundroSnap using a modern, efficient tech stack:
Frontend:
- React with Next.js for a responsive and dynamic user interface
- TailwindCSS and shadcn/ui for clean, customizable styling
- Lucide icons for consistent and attractive iconography
Backend:
- Node.js for server-side logic
- MongoDB for efficient data storage and retrieval
- META's Llama model for the AI laundry assistant
Challenges we ran into
- Balancing the fun, social aspects of the app with its serious environmental message
- Developing an accurate algorithm to estimate microfiber impact based on user laundry habits
- Ensuring the AI assistant provided accurate and helpful laundry advice
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Learning new technologies (React and Next.js)
- Designing an intuitive UI that seamlessly integrates environmental metrics with social features
- Implementing a real-time impact visualization that helps users see the difference they're making
- Creating an AI assistant that provides personalized, eco-friendly laundry advice
- Developing a system that turns everyday laundry into a collective effort to save our oceans
What we learned
- The complexity of microfiber pollution and the importance of raising awareness
- How to effectively combine social media mechanics with environmental education
- The challenges and rewards of creating an app with a purpose beyond entertainment
What's next for LaundroSnap
