Language Translator App

Inspiration

English Complexity: English is often dubbed as one of the most challenging languages to learn, with over 170,000 words in current use and another 47,000 obsolete words.

Lost in Translation: Studies suggest that non-native English speakers, on average, encounter 2-3 unfamiliar words in everyday conversations, leading to misunderstandings or missed opportunities.

The Learning Curve: The average person takes approximately 600-750 hours of study to achieve fluency in English, depending on their native language and learning environment.

Problem statement: Despite the global dominance of English in business, entertainment, and academia, many face daily challenges in comprehending and communicating effectively. These challenges aren't just about vocabulary but also about cultural nuances, idiomatic expressions, and the sheer unpredictability of the language. The result? Frustration, miscommunication, and a feeling of being left out.

Our Solution: Our app isn't just a translator; it's a bridge. By instantly translating and saving words, it offers users a personalised learning experience. Over time, it adapts, making suggestions based on frequently searched words or phrases. It's like having a pocket-sized language tutor, always ready to assist. Whether you're a student, a traveler, or someone just looking to brush up on their English, our app is designed to make the learning process interactive, efficient, and enjoyable.

How we built it

Technologies: Python, React-Native, Firebase

A web and mobile responsive application that is built using Python backend and React-Native Front end. The application works by utilising OpenCV for scanning, Dictionary for English Translations and Firebase for user Authentication.

The Application works by taking in a scanned photo, and using computer vision with AI to identify the word that is shown in the photo, taking that word and translating it directly from english to the language of choice, and the words for translation as well as the original words is stored in the firebase for easy retrieval process.

Challenges we ran into

We needed a tech stack that can suit our different requirements and this tech stack must be seamlessly compatible with all the device platforms we plan to use, such as android and IOS.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We had achieved a working prototype in less than 48 hours that can be sold to a real market, with ongoing development. Furthermore, This is something that feels new and offer direct value in a instantaneous manner.

What we learned

Fast track our brainstorm ideas in the least amount of time taken so we can start the development process ASAP. As we got further in the development process, we were able to make decisions quickly based on our user requirements and developing features that is critical to our application.
