Road to LA28: The Pulse of Momentum
What it does
The LA28 Momentum Engine is an AI-powered intelligence platform designed to analyze, visualize, and project the performance of Olympic sports heading into the Los Angeles 2028 Games. It bridges the gap between historical data and real-time trends to provide a "live" look at the national athletic pipeline
Inspiration
With the Summer Olympics returning to Los Angeles in 2028, there is a massive shift in the sporting landscape—from the debut of Flag Football to the historic return of Cricket. We wanted to build a platform that goes beyond simple schedules, providing a "Pulse Check" on every sport's readiness and growth trajectory. Our inspiration was to blend the precision of Swiss data design with the vibrant, forward-looking energy of the LA28 brand.
How we built it
The application is a high-fidelity React dashboard designed for discovery. We used the Google Gemini API as our "Prediction Engine," processing historical data, youth participation trends, and regional readiness to generate dynamic "Momentum Scores." The UI was crafted using Tailwind CSS 4 and Motion to ensure every interaction—from the horizontal momentum bracket to the strategic analysis deep-dives—feels fluid, premium, and professional.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was creating an AI methodology that felt grounded in reality rather than just "generic growth." We solved this by developing a multi-vector analysis prompt for Gemini that specifically weight-averages three pillars:
- Medal Density
- Youth Participation
- Regional Infrastructure
Another challenge was managing the UI density—distilling complex strategic data into a mobile-responsive "strategic analysis" view that remains highly readable.
What we learned
We learned how to leverage Large Language Models (LLMs) not just for text generation, but as a classification engine for non-linear data patterns (like "Trajectory" and "Sentiment"). We also deepened our understanding of building "Liquid UI"—interfaces that use subtle staggered animations to guide a user's focus through complex data without overwhelming them.
What's next for Road to LA28
We plan to integrate real-time social engagement APIs and venue-specific geolocation data to provide live "Venue Readiness" scores. We also hope to add a "Fan Pulse" feature where global sentiment is mapped in real-time against the AI's momentum predictions.
