Inspiration
We got the idea for KnowMyRights because a lot of people don’t know their legal rights, especially in different states. If you get stopped by the police or go to a protest, it's hard to know what you can or can't do. We wanted to make a tool that helps people understand their rights quickly and easily, no matter where they are. This helps prevent them from participating in illegal protests and protects them from illegal police actions.
What it does
KnowMyRights is a website that shows you your legal rights based on your location. You can ask it questions like, “What are my housing or consumerism rights at this location?” and it gives you a simple answer based on the laws where you are. It’s made to be fast, easy to use, and helpful in stressful situations. You can even use some parts without the internet.
Challenges we ran into
Finding legal info from all the different states and making it easy to use Making sure the website understood what people were asking Matching your location with the right laws, especially near borders
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a working website that shows rights based on where you are The website looks clean and works well We made it easy to understand legal info, which is usually confusing
What we learned
Legal info can be hard to find and explain, but it’s super important People need to trust a website like this, so it has to be simple and clear We learned a lot about working as a team, building a project, and using real-world data
What's next for KnowMyRights
We want to add more languages so more people can use it Add major additions like countries and expand past just the U.S.A. We also want to build a mobile app so it can be used on phones
