Inspiration

We noticed a major gap in community engagement: students want experience, while nonprofits and local businesses need talent, but the connection process is outdated. Inspired by our team's diverse backgrounds in student leadership and competitive sports, we wanted to build a "central hub" that makes finding a purpose as easy as swiping on a phone.

What it does

KindWave is a swipe-based discovery platform that connects high school and college students with volunteer roles, nonprofits, and local business micro-internships. Students swipe right to match with opportunities that fit their career goals, while organizations use a dedicated dashboard to recruit and track engagement instantly.

How we built it

We built KindWave as a responsive web application using a clean, lightweight stack: HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. We used Visual Studio Code for development, focusing on a mobile-first design that handles swipe gestures smoothly.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was managing a three-sided marketplace. We had to ensure the interface stayed simple while catering to three different groups: Students, Nonprofits, and Small Businesses. We also worked hard on the JavaScript event listeners to make sure the "swipe" animation felt natural and didn't lag.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Successfully integrating specific pathways for both High School and College students. Designing a functional Small Business portal that bridges the gap between local commerce and student talent. Creating a high-fidelity prototype that proves social good can be modern and engaging.

What we learned

We learned that user experience is everything. By simplifying the search process into a "swipe," we can significantly increase student participation. We also improved our team workflow, balancing design and development to build a scalable community engine.

What's next for KindWave

The next step is "Impact Passports"—digital certificates that automatically track a student's hours and skills for their resumes. We also plan to add in-app messaging to allow students and organizations to communicate the moment they match.
