Inspiration
As children of immigrants, we understand the importance of higher education. However, we also realize how intimidating and complicated it can be. Resources can range from free, with limited tools, to expensive camps and college counselors. We wanted to bring a tool which would allow students to organize and plan their route to college.
Problem
Our project addresses the difficulties of navigating the college application process for first generation college students. These students lack the financial, emotional, psychological, and academic resources that are available to most other students.
What our project does
Our project solves this problem by consolidating resources for students in an accessible way, making it easier to find information about local colleges and find other useful information. Our website offers resources such as scholarship opportunities and essay planning prep to help students navigate through the college admissions process in North Carolina. With a built-in college search feature students are able to easily identify what schools meet their financial, academic, and social needs.
Technologies Used
We used HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and jquery.
Challenges
Without prior experience in web development, we ran into many problems when it came to formatting. In addition, we struggled with executing our initial ideas- like an animation on the front page, and a fully functional page that would allow users to sort through colleges with multiple parameters. Rather than completely omitting these features, we would rebuild each idea so that the functionality would be maintained.
