Our inspiration for the Mirra Call project was validated and refined through a critical partnership. The initial concept of improving patient autonomy was brought to life by collaborating with the Occupational Therapists (OT). Her daily experience observing the struggles of patients with limited mobility—how basic routines consumed staff time and eroded patient dignity—provided the authentic clinical foundation for our design. The OT's perspective taught me that our solution needed to be patient-paced, repeatable, and clinically relevant. The vision system wasn't just tracking movement; it was assisting in the re-establishment of motor skills—a core goal of OT. This project guides patients through self-care and morning routines (e.g., hygiene, simple therapeutic exercises) using personalized, patient-paced voice prompts developed in collaboration with an Occupational Therapist.
The primary challenge was the seamless integration of all disparate components into a cohesive system. Our proudest moment was seeing a severely speech-impaired patient, prompted by music played on the mirror, begin singing and vocalizing more words than she was typically able to speak. This validated the emotional and therapeutic value of our compassionate design.
