🌌 Inspiration
Fireflies — or Junkiri in Nepali — light up the night softly, guiding others through darkness. We were inspired by their natural glow and harmony with the environment. In a world where pollution often goes unseen, we wanted to create something that makes the invisible visible — a gentle reminder that caring for our surroundings begins at home. Junkiri brings the firefly’s spirit into modern living, glowing to keep our air clean and our planet cared for.
💨 What it does
Junkiri is a smart home system that monitors air quality and environmental health in real-time. It senses changes in air pollution, humidity, and temperature — and communicates them through soft, firefly-like glows. Junkiri also connects with your smart home ecosystem, helping you make eco-friendly choices while keeping your living space healthy, comfortable, and sustainable.
🛠️ How we built it
We combined IoT sensors, a microcontroller, and machine learning to analyze air quality data. The system connects wirelessly to a mobile app for live updates and insights. The “firefly glow” is powered by adaptive LEDs that change color based on air quality, making the data both visible and intuitive. We also designed a sustainable casing inspired by natural forms, using recyclable materials.
⚡ Challenges we ran into
Integrating multiple sensors while maintaining accuracy and energy efficiency was tricky. We also had to fine-tune the LED feedback system to reflect data clearly without becoming overwhelming. Designing the system to be both smart and environmentally friendly required several rounds of testing and redesign.
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud that Junkiri turned out to be more than just a gadget — it’s a statement of care. We created a functional, aesthetically pleasing, and eco-conscious product that bridges technology and nature. Seeing the glowing light respond to real environmental data felt like watching our idea come to life.
📚 What we learned
We learned how design and technology can come together to inspire environmental awareness. Building Junkiri taught us about sustainable design, data interpretation, and user-centered IoT development — but more importantly, it reminded us of the beauty in small, mindful actions that protect our planet.
🌱 What's next for Junkiri
We plan to enhance Junkiri with AI-driven insights that suggest lifestyle improvements for better air quality. Future versions may include outdoor sensors, community-based air mapping, and integration with smart city networks. Our goal is to make Junkiri a symbol of sustainable living — one soft glow at a time.
